Synonyms

You can enhance the search results by creating synonyms for search terms. When a shop user searches for a synonym, it will be as if they searched for a text string that can be found in the shop literally. This greatly improves the chance of success on a search query, which in turn has a positive impact on your visitors' shopping experience and on conversion.

Synonyms become effective when the search index is rebuilt (which typically happens overnight).

To work with synonyms, in the CloudSuite App go to Marketing > Search and Navigation > Synonyms. An overview appears, listing synonyms that have already been defined. Double-click an existing synonym to open its details or click New to create a new one.

  • Next to Synonym, enter the following elements:
    • one or more search terms that the shop user can enter and that must be redirected, separated by commas
    • an equals sign
    • the text string that is literally present in your shop
  • Set the Language in which the synonym is valid. Synonyms must be defined for all languages separately.

Examples

Correct Use of Synonyms

A synonym defined as cell phone, mobile phone, smartphone, mobile = gsm will cause searching for any of these terms to give the same search results as if the user had searched for gsm.

Incorrect Use of Synonyms

A synonym defined as ddr, ddr2, ddr3, ddr4 = ram will cause searching for any of these terms to give the same search results as if the user had searched for ram.

This is, however, probably not what you want: the listed terms are all different types of RAM, but that distinction is now lost. Consider using a synonyms construction together with a filter facet that allows filtering on the type of RAM.

AI in the Admin

When you work with synonyms in the Admin, the CloudSuite AI functionality is not available. Maintain your synonyms in the CloudSuite Admin to harness the power of AI.
