Synonyms

You can enhance the search results by creating synonyms for search terms. When a shop user searches for a synonym, it will be as if they searched for a text string that can be found in the shop literally. This greatly improves the chance of success on a search query, which in turn has a positive impact on your visitors' shopping experience and on conversion.

Synonyms become effective when the search index is rebuilt (which typically happens overnight).

To work with synonyms, in the CloudSuite Admin go to Search & Navigation > Synonyms. An overview appears, listing all synonyms that have already been defined. Click an existing synonym to open its details or click Create Synonym to create a new one.

  • Set the Language in which the synonyms are valid. Synonyms must be defined for all languages separately.
  • Enter the Search term, which is the text string that is literally present in your shop.
  • Enter any number of Synonyms, separated with a comma. These are the search terms that the shop user can enter and that must be lead to the same search results as they would have seen when searching for the original search term.
  • You can use artificial intelligence (AI) to generate up to three new suggestions for synonyms. Click the CloudSuite AI button next to the field and review the suggestions shown under AI suggestions. Click a suggestion to add it to the list, then click Save to confirm your changes.

Correct Use of Synonyms​

If your Search term is gsm and your Synonyms are cell phone, mobile smartphone, mobile, then searching for any of these terms will give the same search results as if user had searched gsm.

Incorrect Use of Synonyms​

If your Search term is ramand your Synonyms are ddr, ddr2, ddr3, ddr4, then searching for any of these terms will give the same search results as if the user had searched for ram. This is, however, probably not what you want: the search term and the synonyms are all different types of RAM, but that distinction is now lost. Consider using a synonyms construction together with a filter facet that allows filtering on the type of RAM.

AI in the App

Synonyms can also be maintained in the CloudSuite App. However, no AI functionality is available in the App.
