EU Legal Guarantee Notice and GARAN Label

Disclaimer

CloudSuite does not provide legal advice. The information on this page is intended to help you understand the EU legal guarantee notice and the GARAN label, and what they may mean for your webshop. You are responsible for complying with all laws and regulations that apply to your business. The directive and regulation referenced on this page are based on publicly available information at the time of writing. We recommend verifying these references directly on EUR-Lex before relying on them.

From 27 September 2026, webshops selling physical goods to consumers in the EU must use two standardised graphics instead of their own text. This follows from Directive (EU) 2024/825 (the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive, known as EmpCo), which added the requirement to the Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU, and Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960, which sets out the exact format of both graphics.

The EU introduced these rules because member states apply the legal guarantee differently, and many consumers do not know they have this right at all. A harmonised notice shows it in the same form everywhere. The GARAN label puts commercial durability guarantees in one standard format, so a guarantee from one producer is easy to compare with a guarantee from another.

  • The legal guarantee notice reminds consumers of their statutory right to at least two years of legal guarantee on the goods they buy. Every webshop this applies to must show it.
  • The GARAN label covers a different kind of guarantee: a commercial durability guarantee a producer chooses to offer on top of the statutory minimum.
    • Offering one is entirely voluntary. A producer can sell a product with only the statutory two years and nothing else.
    • However, when a producer offers a free additional guarantee that covers the entire product and lasts longer than two years, displaying the GARAN label for that product is mandatory.

Both replace free text. You can no longer describe the legal guarantee or an extended guarantee in your own words or your own design. Use the official graphics instead.

Who Does This Apply To

  • Webshops selling physical goods to consumers (B2C) in the EU must show the legal guarantee notice. This includes new goods, used goods, and goods with digital elements.
  • Webshops that sell only to businesses (B2B), and shops that sell only digital content or services, are exempt.
  • The GARAN label only applies to individual products for which the producer offers a guarantee that is free, covers the whole product, and lasts longer than two years. If a product has no such guarantee, do not show the label for it.
  • This depends on where your webshop visitor is, not on where you ship from or which entity fulfills the order. A store view that sells only to consumers outside the EU stays out of scope, even if the order ships from an EU warehouse.

What You Must Show

Legal guarantee notice (mandatory for every webshop this applies to)

  • The official graphic, unchanged, with a link to the official EU information page.
  • Somewhere webshop visitors find easily, for example your footer or a dedicated page.
  • In every order confirmation email for B2C orders.

GARAN label (mandatory only for qualifying products)

  • On the product detail page, close to the product itself.
  • Next to the specific product in the basket and in the order confirmation email, never for the whole order.
  • Not shown for products without a qualifying guarantee.

Owner Action Steps

If your webshop sells physical goods to consumers in the EU:

  1. Review your product range for producer guarantees that are free, cover the whole product, and last longer than two years.
  2. Get the official graphics and the correct wording from the sources below.
  3. If your webshop serves multiple languages, use the graphic and wording that match each store view's language. The European Commission provides both in all 24 EU languages.
  4. Set up the notice and the label where it applies in your webshop.
Note

Directive (EU) 2024/825 also tightens the rules on environmental claims, for example unproven terms like eco-friendly or climate-neutral. That part is about your own marketing content, not something CloudSuite configures, so review your product texts and claims separately.

Consequences of Non-Compliance

National consumer protection authorities enforce these rules. Non-compliance can lead to inspections, warnings, fines or other enforcement action. Requirements and penalties differ per country, so check with a legal adviser for your situation.
